When the Dutch arrived at the Cape in the 17th Century, they found the San people were using a small succulent as a mood elevator and relaxant. Known as kanna or kougoed, its botanical name is Sceletium Tortuosum.
Sceletium elevates mood and decreases anxiety, stress and tension. The mood-elevating action of Sceletium is caused by a number of alkaloids which interact with the brain’s dopamine and serotonin receptors and it is being used successfully by health professionals with good results for anxiety states and mild to moderate depression.
The plant is not hallucinogenic, and no severe adverse effects have been documented. There have been no confirmed reports of drug interactions. However, because of the neuro-receptor activities of Sceletium, there may be interactions with other pharma drugs.
People taking any psychiatric drug (including all anti-anxiety drugs, sedatives, hypnotics, antidepressants and anti-psychotics and so-called designer or recreational drugs) or any cardiac medications, are advised not to take Sceletium.
Safety during pregnancy has not been established.
Absolute Organix now distributes Sceletium from the Vredelus farm in Namibia. It is an all-natural product. Vredelus owner Molly Kaderi says this about their farming methods: “We let nature take it’s course, grow all plants organically under natural conditions and produce herb medicine that has all the healing powers of wild plants.”
‘We strictly adhere to high quality standards and we guarantee minimum levels of the active ingredients in our materials. We are fully CITES certified and provide all required documentation with every consignment. We are registered as Protected Flora sellers in the RSA.”
Vredelus Sceletium is available from Absolute Organix in 90 X 100mg and 60 X 200mg capsules.
