Blueberries are true-blue royalty of the fruit kingdom, and for good reason. Deliciously sweet and/or tart (depending on the varietal), they are a potent “superberry” – their deep blue-purple colour is a marker of high levels of anthocyanins, compounds that minimise the effects of oxidative stress on the body. But wait. There’s more.
According to Dr Barbara Shukitt-Hale, a neuroscientist and anti-ageing researcher at the US Department of Agriculture and a leading expert on the health benefits of blueberries, their anthocyanins have a lot more to offer: “We found they’re doing a lot besides anti-oxidation. They’re also anti-inflammatory. They … have direct effects on the brain, including plasticity and neuronal communication and neurogenesis; they’re involved in the formation of new neurons. They have far-reaching effects.”
At Absolute Organix, we’ve become born-again blueberry evangelists since we stumbled upon a smart way of turning the berries into a long-life, on-the-go, energy-dense and nutritious snack.
Introducing SuperBerry Blueberry Biltong, made from pressed, air-dried blueberries, bite-size pieces with intense flavour and concentrated amounts of anthocyanins. No sulphites.

Now, like never before, has the state of our immune systems come under such intense scrutiny and become the cause for so much concern.
A strong immune system is the body’s frontline defence against invading pathogens, like Covid-19. It’s our core weapon in the ongoing challenge to live healthily in the 21st Century, to live a life free from a slew of lifestyle and other illnesses.
Immune-boosting supplements are, nowadays, pretty much a no-brainer for health-conscious consumers, and there is no shortage of choices. “Dr Google” will point you in hundreds of thousands of directions in your search for an answer to the question: what should I be taking to support my immune system?
At Absolute Organix/Lifematrix, we’ve been researching the options, and after carefully weighing up the pros and cons of many substances, we’ve launched Lifematrix Immune Support (LIS).
LIS is a fusion of key immune-supporting ingredients. They are:
As children return to school, parents are rightly concerned about them carrying and using alcohol-based sanitisers.
Absolute Organix addresses this challenge with our alcohol-free, Kid Safe Sanitiser.
The sanitiser is made from salt-water that has undergone electro-chemical activation (electrolysis). The resulting liquid, known as Anolyte, contains hypochlorous acid that destroys bacteria and viruses on contact.
Hypochlorous acid has been tested extensively and found to be highly effective, 100% safe and non-toxic to humans and animals, but deadly to pathogens. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the use of hypochlorous acid as a sanitising agent for Covid-19.
Anolyte, a powerful oxidant, mimics the way the human body defends itself against viruses and
Lifematrix Desert Milk has won the 2020 World Dairy Innovation Award for Best Functional Dairy.
The awards, announced in London on June 16, are organised each year by UK-based FoodBev Media and Zenith Global, the international food industry consulting group.
A YouTube presentation of the awards is available here.
The judges said of Desert Milk (a blend of camel milk from the Kalahari and goat milk from the Cedarberg): “Strong technical platform, strong consumer proposition, terrific packaging and design.”
Desert Milk forms part of Lifematrix’s specialist milk powder range, launched recently.

One of my dearest friends recently died from Covid-19, and since then I have been seeking alternatives to just hoping I won’t get infected (unlikely) and then holding thumbs it won’t kill me ...
You can listen to an audio version here, or carry on reading below.
As Covid-19 spreads rapidly, triggering increasing anxiety over the relentless rise in the infection rate, our understanding of the way the virus works, who is most vulnerable and of improved protocols for treatment has increased significantly. But on the self-preparedness front, very little advice, apart from social distancing, mask wearing and frequent hand-washing/sanitising has been forthcoming from health authorities. More importantly, what happens if you get the virus? Is it just a wait and see game of Russian roulette as my friend discovered?
Holistically-minded doctors are advising us to increase our intake of Vitamins B, C and D, along with quercetin, selenium and zinc, to help boost our immune systems, but this could be too late if one is already infected. Otherwise, it’s youth/luck/prayer that will hopefully keep the virus at bay until the silver bullet of a vaccine arrives sometime in the future (in my case, the first option is a

Let’s face it, dairy has taken somewhat of a beating in recent times as plant “milk” alternatives have crested a wave of popularity on the back of the vegan movement’s sharp rise.
But now dairy is fighting back, armed with nutritional weapons like potent immune-boosting proteins that put real dairy into a superfood category.
Lifematrix is pleased to launch a range a specialist dairy powders that showcase the nutritional muscle of milk from camels, goats and cows.

Finding ways to boost one’s immunity is probably top of mind of half the world right now. But wading through the tidal wave of information and misinformation is a huge challenge.
So when the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) recently published a paper on natural approaches to the prevention and treatment of Covid-19, I dug straight in. The IFM has a long and credible history educating practitioners about the use of nutraceuticals (foods with “benefits”).
The paper, titled Covid-19: Functional Medicine Resources, has a fairly simple objective – to list those nutraceutical, botanical “agents” that may deliver real help in the time of Corona.
The IFM paper provides a useful framework for understanding why these functional medicines may be
Tonic/medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries across Asia to support wellness, but only in recent years have researchers and health-conscious consumers in the West started paying serious attention to them.
The mushrooms are now increasingly valued for their adaptogenic (bringing balance to the body) properties and as a source of immune-modulating beta-glucans and anti-oxidants, as well as pre-biotics.
Lifematrix has introduced a range of tonic mushroom blends. The mushrooms/fungi chosen include some well-known “super-shrooms” such a chaga, oyster, shiitake and lion’s mane, but also exotics like bamboo, black hoof and snow fungi. The mushrooms have been grown in SA specially for Lifematrix.
Three blends are available: Wellbeing, Anti-Ageing and Energising. Sold in 100g cannisters.
The powdered mushrooms can be used to make hot beverages, added to soups/stews or smoothies, or as a seasoning.
GOVERNMENT’S CORONAVIRUS WEBSITE WITH LATEST INFO IS HERE
With the 21-day lockdown now in force, only businesses supplying essential services (which includes the manufacturing and distribution of foods and health products) are exempted. That includes us. We will remain open during the lockdown but we will be constrained by the need to protect the health of our team. That means only a skeleton staff will be working under strict safety protocols. Without doubt, our service levels will be negatively affected throughout this period. Please bear with us.

Anti-viral sprays have become a daily essential. Absolute Organix Sanitiser is a powerful, eco-friendly, anti-bacterial and anti-viral hand and surface spray that is alcohol-free, 100% biodegradable and contains zero “nasties”.
The sanitiser is made from salt-water that has undergone a process of electro-chemical activation (electrolysis). The resulting liquid, known as Anolyte, contains hypochlorous acid that destroys bacteria and viruses on contact.
Anolyte works in the same way that the human body does when producing white blood cells, which, once activated, attack invading bacteria and viruses by penetrating their cell walls and killing them.
Hypochlorous acid has been tested extensively worldwide and found to be highly effective. It has been accredited by key international agencies. It is CE certified (complies with standards set by the European Union) and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as a disinfectant.
The Anolyte used in Absolute Organix Sanitiser has been manufactured in a SANAS-certified facility.

MCT oils are a fast-growing category in the health and wellness sector, powered by carb-conscious consumers seeking alternate energy sources that keep insulin levels under control. Whether it’s Ketogenic, Banting or Paleo, these on-trend dietary lifestyles are all pointing in the same direction – towards MCTs.
Lifematrix has long led the MCT category in SA, offering a variety of medium chain triglyceride products (oils and powders) in various sizes. The latest addition to our range is a Cherry-flavoured MCT oil that adds a subtly delicious flavour to the oil.
Taken on their own, or added to smoothies/shakes or bullet-proof coffees, Lifematrix MCTs are the trusted choice of those seeking instant, sugar-free energy.
Lifematrix MCTs are available in 500ml, 2L and 5L variants.

Lifematrix SuperSmoothies are protein-based quick meals-on-the-go (just add water/juice/milk). Or blend with fruit and other good things to make a deliciously nutritious smoothie.
These smoothie blends are also rich in gut-friendly fibre and pre-biotics, and contain energy-dense MCTs (medium chain triglycerides).
There are two variants: Dairy and Vegan. In the dairy blend, we use premium whey isolate as the protein base. For the vegan blend, we use whole-grain brown rice protein. In both cases you’re getting a complete protein with all essential amino acids.
Ingredients: Protein powders (whey or rice), MCT powder (for quick, no-carb energy), milled chia and flax seeds (extra protein plus fibre), Swedish beet fibre and prebiotics (from chicory) for gut health. We lightly sweeten the blends with zero-kiloJoule erythritol (no insulin spiking).
The Dairy SuperSmoothie is Banting-friendly and the sugar content of both blends is low.

Lifematrix has led the way in collagen protein for several years. Our Purple Protein, made with clinically-trialled Peptan* collagen and blueberries to provide Vitamin C for increased bio-availability, delivers premium Type 1 hydrolysed bovine collagen to support joint and bone health as well as “beauty-from-within” .
In response to the increasing awareness of the benefits of collagen and the need to make it more affordable, Lifematrix has introduced a 1kg “family pack” of Purple Protein that reduces the cost per serving by 20%. With over 80 X 12g servings per container, it works out at less than R9 per serving at our recommended retail price. That’s a great deal for a product of this quality.
Lifematrix Purple Protein is also available in 200g and 400g tins.

Our Truefood range of natural and organic pantry essentials is continually being updated with new products to meet growing demand for back-to-basics foods. The range now number close to 100 products.
The latest additions are cassava, raw cane sugar and long-grain brown rice, all sourced from small producers in Mozambique.
Check out the full range of Truefood products here.
The Lifematrix range of functional foods, with its strong focus on clean, high-quality proteins, has undergone a packaging and design makeover. As the picture shows, it’s a streamlined, fresh look with a crisp new logo.
But the really big change is our packaging materials. We’ve opted for mostly natural materials, like cardboard tubes and tin tops/bottoms, and the plastic sealing caps are 100% recyclable. Yes, we still have some work to do to make our packaging 100% Nature-friendly, but we’re getting close.
The cardboard containers feature a peel-off seal (like those you find on coffee tins) to keep freshness in whilst on the store shelf.
We’re launching the new look with Lifematrix’s collagen offering, Purple Protein and Collagen Broth, and the remainder of the range will follow shortly.
We also have a slew of innovative new products and variants on their way that will ensure that the Lifematrix brand continues to lead the way in functional foods.
Of all the natural sweeteners out there, honey still remains the hottest of favourites. Maybe it’s our childhood memories of licking the sweet nectar off sticky fingers; perhaps it’s our admiration for those remarkable bees who toil so tirelessly to build their hives, protect their queen, pollinate the Plant Kingdom and keep Nature in harmony. Bottom line: honey still rocks! So much so that South Africans consume around 4 000 tons of the stuff a year.
At Truefood (a division of Absolute Organix), we’ve recently set up our own honey production line, sourcing and packaging raw, unfiltered local honey from respected, dedicated beekeepers.
Our honey is seasonal, and the nectar sources vary depending on the time of the year. The season starts in June in the area around Pretoria-Rustenberg-Groblersdal, where the bees thrive on indigenous aloes. Aloe daviana is purported to be the richest source of natural pollen in the world and this gives a huge nutritional boost to the bee populations and, as a result, to both the quality and amount of their honey.
Then, in the Spring, the hives journey to the Lowveld for the bees to feast on fragrant orange blossom and the gorgeous pink and white flowering racemes of macadamia. Timing is especially crucial when it comes to orange blossom – the trees flower for only three weeks. Orange and macadamia honeys are aromatically more fragrant than aloe, and are also slow granulating.
In October/November, the hives are on the move again, this time to nearby eucalyptus (bluegum) plantations established originally by the mines.
Bees, like the rest of us in SA, typically take a “vacation” over December, and then it’s on to the Free State’s endless horizon of sunflowers. By March, they’ve been moved again, this time to bluegum plantations in Northern Natal.
And then the cycle starts again …

There’s been a surge of interest in bone broths recently as the benefits of collagen (the main ingredient of these broths) gets the thumbs up for a variety of dietary (ketogenic/paleo/ Banting) and wellness reasons: as the foundation for strong connective tissue, sturdy bones and beautiful skin, as well as rapid wound healing and the easing of joint pain.
Collagen is a complex protein chain (a peptide) comprising primarily the amino acids glycine and proline/hydroxyproline. As we age, our body’s collagen stores are depleted and need to be replaced via diet. There’s no more visible proof of collagen depletion than our skin: wrinkles are the clearest sign of collagen loss.
There are two important types of collagen: Type I is found in bones and skin, tendons and ligaments. Type II is the key component of cartilage. The main sources of dietary collagen are beef bones/hides
With the growing interest in ketogenic diets along with the increasing popularity of medium chain fats as a carb-free source of energy (ketones), Lifematrix offers a complete solution, from delicious, vanilla-flavoured MCTs for bullet-proofed coffees to pure coconut-sourced MCTs in a variety of sizes, from 250ml to 2L (and bulk on request).
We’re blessed with many fantastic natural products, including essential oils obtained from a variety of indigenous plants with healing/soothing properties. Oils from plants such as African Bluegrass, Buchu, Cape Geranium, Snowbush, Helichrysum …
Pure Indigenous offers an extensive range of these fynbos oils and blends, as well as bodycare products, beard and lip balms, potions, room sprays and insect repellents using these fantastic oils.

Food manufacturers, big and small, are coming under increasing scrutiny by consumers these days over the safety of their products – and rightly so. After the awful listeria outbreak this year that took 200 lives and which brought the subject into sharp focus, there’s just no escaping the reality that our food system is fraught with challenges and dangers, and that good manufacturing practices and a commitment to food safety is the price of entry into this sector.
Post the Tiger listeria outbreak, Government has been tightening up regulations and there’s a wide consensus that it’s been long overdue. That’s not to say anywhere near enough is being done (especially when it comes to inspection and
Our certified organic apple cider vinegar from Spain is just as good – if not better – than some other well-known brands, but at a price that’s a whole lot sweeter.
Raw and unfiltered, dark, tangy and musty – with the Mother – Absolute Organix Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is packed in 1L and 2L jugs – so we’re offering best quality in bulk at best price. It’s ideal for those who have made ACV an essential part of their daily routine, or for families who consume ACV in larger quantities and want affordability without compromising on the myriad health benefits that raw, organic apple cider vinegar is renowned for.
Apple Cider Vinegar is made from fermented apple cider that develops a variety of health-supporting probiotics and enzymes, but without the high levels of sugar found in apple cider or apple juice.
1. Regulates Blood Sugar Levels
The ability of apple cider vinegar to help maintain normal blood sugar is one of the most well-studied ACV benefits. In one study, vinegar consumption was found to decrease blood sugar levels by around 30% after eating white bread. ACV may also increase insulin sensitivity. A study in Diabetes Care showed that vinegar ingestion helped significantly improve insulin sensitivity by up to 34% in those with either type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

In a food system drenched in pesticides/herbicides and synthetic fertilisers on depleted soils seeded with GMO crops, it’s no wonder that health-conscious consumers are increasingly seeking out organic alternatives.
And, while organically-grown foods satisfy the basic requirements of “clean” nutrition, the truth is organic standards set the bar pretty low when it comes to sustainable farming. It would take a “super-organic” standard to really get to grips with a truly eco-friendly approach to producing food of the highest natural quality. There is such a standard: it’s called Demeter (named after the Greek goddess of fertility).
The international Demeter standard (see logo above) has been around for about 90 years, but few people are aware of it. Demeter goes far beyond what we typically regard as “organic”, and only those farmers 100% committed to its demanding, sustainable practices ( a system called biodynamic farming) can be Demeter-certified.
The original Demeter standard, known as the “Farm Standard”, was written in Germany in 1928 by the polymath genius Rudolf Steiner, pictured right, founder of the Waldorf school movement and originator of the philosophy of Anthroposophy. The Farm Standard codified Steiner’s research into harmonious/sustainable (bio-dynamic) farming practices enforced through a strict certification program. Steiner’s work is
BioBodi’s Organic Seabuckthorn Berry Oil is a remarkable gift of Nature. Wild harvested on the Tibetan plateau, the fruit of this bright orange berry yields an oil that is rich in nutrients that heal, repair and protect the skin from premature ageing.
* It contains the anti-oxidants beta-carotene and lycopene (which give the oil its distinctive deep red-orange colour), as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD), a key enzyme that helps prevent free radical damage.
* Seabuckthorn is the No 1 source of the anti-inflammatory Omega-7, palmitoleic acid. It also contains GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), the Omega 6 essential fatty acid also found in evening primrose, borage and hemp and which has excellent skin repair credentials.

For over a decade Absolute Organix has been producing a range of superior omega oils, cold-pressing organic flax (and now also chia) seed oils and blending them with other quality plant oils. We’ve always taken great care to ensure the freshness of these fragile but potent oils, gently pressing them at low temperatures, allowing natural settling and then bottling them in opaque glass bottles under nitrogen. We’ve learned to be patient. Think of us as the Jack Daniels of omega oils!
Now we’ve given the range a bold makeover, switching to white glass bottles with bright new labels. “We were looking a little tired, a little too medicinal in the old dark glass bottles,” says CEO Bruce
It’s a long overdue contribution to the ketogenic movement in South Africa (using fats rather than carbs as a key source of energy), and provides a premium alternative to our original MCT oil (a blend of coconut and palm kernel MCTs).
Lifematrix coconut MCTs contain the same ratio of medium chain triglycerides as our original product: a 60/40 ratio of C8 (caprylic) to C10 (capric) fatty acids.

In line with our clean food philosophy, we have now “downgraded” our packaging to meet a higher standard of eco-friendliness, using paper bags with lightweight plastic liners.
Whilst this is a significant step forward from the plastic tubs and heavy plastic pouches we used previously, we are first to agree that we still have a way to go before being able to claim true compostable/re-usable packaging. But it’s a project we are committed to and we are working with our packaging suppliers to take us to that next level.
Yogi Tea’s roots stem from the 3 000-year-old Indian Ayurvedic teachings about the balance between body, mind and soul. In the 1960s, Indian yoga and Ayurveda traditions were first introduced to the West. Yogi Bhajan, a master of Kundalini Yoga, was one of the early pioneers of this knowledge transfer. In 1969 he came to the USA to share his wisdom and knowledge of Ayurveda and yoga with his students while serving them an aromatic spice tea blend which they affectionately named “Yogi tea”.
This unique Ayurvedic tea blend is based on an original recipe by Yogi Bhajan and contains cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, and black pepper.
Today, people all around the world enjoy the special blends made from more than 80 organically-

Egg whites are one of the highest-quality proteins available. They have a protein content >80% (equivalent to whey concentrate), and contain zero sugar. One kilogram of egg white (albumin) protein requires 250 egg shells.
Egg white protein is easily digestible, making it an ideal alternative for people who cannot tolerate milk proteins.
Egg albumin contains all nine essential aminos and the branched-chain amino acids, leucine, isoleucine and valine, which are critical for muscle protein synthesis and therefore muscle growth. Research shows that egg white protein has similar effects on stimulating muscle development as whey.
Arginine is also present in high amounts in egg white protein. Arginine boosts nitric-oxide (NO) production in the body, which dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to muscles. This helps

Demonized for years as a heart-attack-in-a-bottle because of its saturated fat content, these days coconut oil is right there at the top of the superfood hit-parade. Rich in anti-microbial lauric acid and energy-dense MCTs, coconut oil is safe for cooking, brilliant for skin and hair, and helpful for a variety of health conditions.
So it comes as no surprise that as the word has spread about the goodness in coconut oil, consumer demand has rocketed and suddenly the supermarket and health store shelves are dotted with a multitude of coconut oil brands, not all of the same quality.
In an article I wrote early in 2015 after my return from Sri Lanka where I had secured a new supplier of virgin organic coconut oil, I laid out the deceptions that are possible when it comes to coconut oil. And it does not make for happy reading. You can read the full article here.
Bottom line is there are either nutrition-less, highly-processed coconut oils on the market or fabulous, natural, health-giving nectars. But how can you tell the difference because they tend to all
Flax and chia seeds are two of Nature’s richest sources of the Omega-3 essential fat, ALA. Despite all the hype from the fish oil industry that denigrates plant-based Omega-3s, there is solid research to show that this is a simplistic viewpoint that ignores key processes involved in fatty acid metabolism and that ALA is a crucial dietary source of EPA and DHA, the essential fats also found in fish oils. See research link below.
So don’t be too easily seduced by an industry that makes a fortune out of what was once a waste product from commercial fishing and which requires intensive processing and the use of heat (which destroys Omega-3s) in order to make it safe for human consumption. Truth is fish oils are pharmaceuticals, not foods.
And because they’re mostly in capsules to hide the gross taste, oxidation is often masked: did you know that the smell of rotting fish is actually the smell of its oils going rancid? Rule of thumb with fish oils: if it repeats on you, it’s probably rancid. And rancidity causes cascades of health-threatening free-radicals to be released into the body.
Cold-pressed plant-sourced Omega-3s, on the other hand, are wholesome, real foods that the body can recognise and use. Free of any contamination found in marine environments, and requiring no harsh processing, the benefits of plant-sourced Omega-3s goes far beyond the limited therapeutic benefits of fish oil (mostly eye/brain health – the heart health claim has proven mythical).
It’s worth noting, too, that fish do not actually make Omega-3s. All Omega-3 originates in the plant kingdom from micro-algae. The krill eat the algae and the fish eat the krill. So the Omega-3 story starts – and really should end – with plants.
Absolute Organix has been cold-pressing virgin oils for over a decade. We gently squeeze the oil from these seeds, producing the highest quality oil with all its Omega-3 integrity intact. The
Lifematrix’s new Supersmoothie Essentials are ideal quick meals-on-the-go – just add water, nut milk or dairy and shake/blend. Or top up with fruit and other good things to make a deliciously nutritious smoothie.
There are two variants: Dairy and Vegan. In the dairy blend we use native whey isolate protein with oat protein. For the vegan blend we use sprouted whole-grain brown rice with the oat protein. In both cases you’re getting a complete protein with all essential amino acids.
Other ingredients: MCT powder (for quick, no-carb energy), chia and flax meal (for extra protein, soluble fibre); pineapple fibre and prebiotics from chicory (for gut health). And we lightly sweeten the blends with zero-kiloJoule erythritol (no insulin spiking).
The Dairy SuperSmoothie is Banting-friendly from an ingredients perspective and the sugar content is especially low (see below).
The nutritional ratios are as follows:
Carbs (27% of which 20% = fibre and 3,5% = sugars)
Fats (21% of which 18% = saturated fats from MCTs)
Now available in 400g pouches (20 X 20g servings)
Our Lifematrix protein powders are now available in brighter, cleaner new packaging: see-through zip-lock pouches. The pouches are being phased in to replace the plastic tubs that have been commonplace in the sector for years. The clear pouches are being used for both our medium size (400g) and large (1kg) protein powders.
At the same time, we’ve raised the quality standard of Lifematrix’s whey protein. We’re now sourcing “native” whey isolate from Germany made directly from skim milk – not a byproduct of cheese-making, which is what most companies use. It means our whey isolate (90% pure protein, nothing added) requires single pasteurization only (cheese-processed whey requires double pasteurization). Less pasteurization means less heat, and that means higher nutrient quality.
Note: Because of the superfine density of our whey protein powder (which gives it excellent water solubility), the new see-through pouches can only hold 300g and 800g of the powder (instead of the 400g/1kg tubs). As a result, the price has been lowered accordingly.

Quality and safety is – or at least should be – a big part of the life of any business involved in food processing/distribution. Without an extensive set of policies and procedures to monitor ingredients, manufacturing processes and final product, to constantly assess microbial risk and to be able to manage product recalls in health emergencies, no-one should be producing/selling food to the public. Well, that’s what the law says. In reality things are quite different given the poor levels of enforcement in this country.
In the absence of the state, it’s the big food retailers who have taken on the responsibility of ensuring (with varying degrees of effectiveness) compliance with food safety standards by their suppliers
Every year around Easter our factory is visited by a rather stern and methodical man named Ralph who represents Germany’s BCS Oko, one of the largest and most respected organic inspection agencies (it certifies 450 000 farms and 1000 businesses like ours around the world).
In the build-up to his visit, Absolute Organix is a flurry of high-adrenalin activity as we rush to ensure that all the documentation around our organic procurement and processing as well our physical production facilities will stand up to Ralph’s laser-beam scrutiny.
Inspector Ralph will spend the entire day sifting through all the paperwork required for organic certification (and it’s a small mountain), inspecting our premises and watching our production

Our Lifematrix protein powders are now available in 200g ziplock foil packs. Ideal for gym bags or travelling (the packs include a 20g serving scoop so there’s no guessing). The new size pack is in addition to the 400g and 1 kg tubs (yes, we are looking to get rid of those plastic behemoths as soon as we can).
A big plus of the new size is that it also makes it far more affordable for customers to try out the different protein powders.
The coconut triangle in Sri Lanka
Building up a sustainable supply of certified organic coconut oil and flour has proven to be a real challenge for us over the last year as demand has surged and our Mozambique partner has just not been able to keep up.
For several months now I have been researching other suppliers around the world (in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka) trying to find an additional source of oil that meets our standards. I have learnt over the years to seek out wherever possible the source rather than rely on middlemen/brokers because proof of provenance (who makes it, how they make it) is really the only way to confirm quality, especially when it comes to organic.
My search finally led me to a family-owned oil producer in the coconut triangle of Sri Lanka whose response to my …

Thanks to Prof Tim Noakes and his Real Meal Revolution team, the hot new word on everyone’s lips these days is ketosis – the burning of fuel from fats and proteins instead of sugars – and ketogenic diets are all the rage.
The Banting diet (high-fat/low carb) is ketogenic, but so too is the Paleo diet (high protein/low carb). Powered by fats/proteins? Then your’e going keto!
To help those keto-consumers get a quick and tasty fix of carb-free energy, we are now offering the KETOslim range from Nature’s Plus in the USA. They deliver servings of over 20g of protein and just 2g of net carbs.
Available as a shake (in sachets as well as tins) and in bars, KETOslim comprises a variety of dairy and plant proteins as well as proteolytic enzymes, spirulina, critical flora, carnitine, and a whole food combo of fruits and vegetables, like broccoli, spinach, apple and apricot.
These are true meal replacements. For more info on these products, click here.
Interest in coconut flour has been surging in recent months thanks to the paleo diet-inspired book by Dr Tim Noakes and colleagues, The Real Meal Revolution (it’s sold over 100 000 copies in SA).
Our Coconut Flour, produced in Mozambique, is course-milled and full flavoured, lending baked goods a rich texture and natural sweetness.
You can replace up to 10-20% of the flour called for in recipes with coconut flour, adding an equivalent amount of additional liquid to the recipe.

MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides, which comprise primarily caprylic and capric fatty acids. The oil is clear, odorless and pleasant tasting. MCT oil occurs naturally in coconut and palm kernel oils.
MCT oil was initially used to help treat diseases such as cystic fibrosis, obesity, and fat malabsorption. More recently, athletes, bodybuilders, and diet gurus have jumped on the MCT bandwagon, embracing its fat-burning and energy-sustaining powers.
MCTs have also received a major boost from the Banting community because the medium-chain fats can help Banting dieters get into – and stay in – ketosis, where the body switches its main energy source from carbs/sugars to fats.
It’s the latest cuppa for a high-performance lifestyle:
coffee with MCT oil & butter.
Click here for more info on the drink that’s catching on
like wildfire amongst performers, athletes and business execs.
When MCTs are absorbed into the blood stream, they bypass the normal digestion process that fats go through and are instead metabolised immediately by the liver for energy, so they won’t be stored in the fat cells.
When a meal includes medium chain triglycerides, there is a significant increase in the number of calories burned (thermogenic effect). When more calories are used, fewer are stored as fat, which helps to reduce body fat levels.

Harmful bacteria and pesticide residues on fresh fruit and vegetables are a worrying reality we all have to face if we don’t (always) have access to organic supplies. But now there’s a quick and easy way – that’s 100% natural – to get rid of these “nasties” in store-bought produce …
Introducing Absolute Organix’s new Organic Fruit & Veg Spray, a powerful, all-natural way to safely eliminate pesticide residues and harmful microbes from fresh produce. It also extends freshness. Simply spray and rinse.
Developed in Australia, the sanitising agents in our Fruit & Veg Spray are made from citrus bioflavanoids (mainly from bitter orange) and organic plant acids (see ingredient info below). The spray is hypo-allergenic, non-toxic and completely bio-degradable. It contains no artificial dyes, fragrances, preservatives, petroleum-derived ingredients or harmful chemicals such as chlorine, ammonia and triclosan, so it is safe for people and animals of all ages – and for our planet.
Coconut oil has undergone a dramatic image makeover. Not long ago it was pilloried as a heart-clogging, tropical grease. These days it’s being hailed as a good fat with myriad health benefits. So what’s the truth? Unfortunately the answer is not that simple because, depending on how the oil is extracted, there is vast difference in nutritional quality – and thus health benefits. Which one are you using?
In the article below, Steve Good, a technical consultant with Absolute Organix’s coconut oil pressing partner in Mozambique, outlines the difference between real virgin coconut oil produced by direct micro-expelling (this is the way we make our oil) and coconut oil produced by harsh industrial methods that destroy the nutrients in the oil.
If you’re wondering how important this “cinderella” mineral is – calcium somehow (and erroneously) seems to grab all the attention – then the Magnesium Online Library is a huge resource of information.
We’ve now introduced two new liquid magnesium products: a SPORT SPRAY with wintergreen essential oil to provide muscle relief and an ORAL SPRAY mouthwash with spearmint essential oil. Both these products utilise the same super-saturated magnesium chloride solution (and Kalahari crystal salt) that goes into the original Lifematrix Magnesium Oil transdermal spray pictured on the right.
They are available in 100ml bottles.
The vegan lifestyle is fast gaining critical mass, and Absolute Organix/Lifematrix has been supporting vegans for several years with superior quality nutritional products like our plant protein concentrates (Raw Vegan Protein, Yellow Pea, Pea & Hemp etc) and essential fatty acids (Omega Pure DHA, Omega 369 Organic etc).
Now we’re raising the vegan nutrition bar even higher with Lifematrix Vegan Super Smoothie Essentials. Formulated to provide vegans (and anyone else) with a nutrient-dense quick drink or smoothie blend, “Essentials” uniquely combines high-quality plant protein with a combo of superfoods, pre-biotics and fibre.
We’ve formulated “Essentials” around our flagship Raw Vegan Protein, made from wholegrain, sprouted brown rice, an 80% protein concentrate produced by fermentation/enzyme activity, using no heat or chemicals to ensure excellent

We are firm believers that the key to unlocking good health is your breakfast smoothie. Load it with protein (eg rice, pea, whey, hemp), pack it with superfoods like acai, maca and cacao, and blend with a spoon of Omega-rich oils … now you’ve laid the foundation for a power day, your body ready to absorb all the knocks that life dishes out. But what about the fibre?
Digestive problems seem so commonplace these days – constipation remedies are the No 1 product sold in pharmacies. Efficient elimination – “being regular” – is critical to overall wellbeing and that’s why we’ve introduced a gut-healthy fibre made from pineapples – Lifematrix Tropical Fibre – that can be taken on it’s own or added to your morning smoothie.
Absolute Organix is proud to extend our links to Swiss organic excellence with the launch of Sidroga Mother and Child herbal teas in SA. The teas are a perfectcomplement to Holle organic formulas and porridges (also from Switzerland) which we have been distributing in SA for close to a decade.
Sidroga organic teas have true medicinal properties, helping babies (and their parents!) cope with a range of infant and childhood challenges like sleep, colic, colds and flu. They are registered as complementary medicines with the MCC and are Nappi coded.
To ensure freshness and therapeutic benefit, the teabags are packed in individual foil sachets. They are free from any added sugar, artificial flavourings and additives.
The Sidroga range consists of:
Cold & Flu Tea for Children (elderflower, lime blossoms and thyme).
Alleviates symptoms associated with colds and flu. Suitable from 1 year.
Absolute Organix Omega Pure – a 100% vegan source of the Omega-3 essential fat DHA – is being relaunched later this month. Omega Pure has been absent from the market for over a year because of supply problems. We are now sourcing from a brand-new producer in Switzerland who has assured us of continuous supply.
Using a proprietary fermentation process, the DHA in Omega Pure is extracted from micro-algae, Nature’s original source of this essential fat which is usually obtained from krill and oily fish.
Omega Pure is an especially good choice of Omega-3 for pregnant and breast-feeding women (DHA is the key brain-building fat for infants): the algae are grown under pristine conditions in ponds completely free of any ocean contaminants like mercury and dioxins or, in the case of farmed fish, of antibiotics and growth hormones. Of course, that makes Omega Pure a smart choice for everyone!
And unlike marine oils which require intensive cleaning/heating in order to extract the fatty acids, the oils in Omega-Pure are cold-extracted, so the quality and bio-availability of the DHA is of the highest order.
Omega Pure is available in glass bottles of 60 vegecaps each containing 200mg of DHA.
Note: the algae used to produce the DHA in Omega Pure are guaranteed non-GMO.
UPDATE Dec 1, 2012:
Several clients have asked us why Omega Pure contains only DHA, and not the other important Omega-3 found in fish oils, EPA. Does it mean vegetarians are losing out?
Not at all. It turns out that whilst EPA is lower down the Omega-3 conversion ladder (which roughly goes like this: ALA->EPA->DHA), the human body is very efficient at reversing the EPA-DHA pathway, so EPA can readily be made if the body has adequate levels of DHA.
In clinical trials using the algae oil in Omega Pure, Geppert et al found that vegetarians significantly increased their levels of DHA when compared to a placebo group. They also found a significant increase in EPA levels. In the study, after 8 weeks, DHA levels increased by 161% and EPA levels by 33% in the trial group. There was zero change in the placebo group.
* FOOTNOTE: So much of the focus on Omega-3 supplementation is based on heart, brain and eye health, but did you know that sperm contains almost 15% DHA? If you consider the dramatic increase in fertility problems in the West, and our lousy, fat-free diets, perhaps an Omega3-rich diet could be just the thing to send those sperm swimming happily and healthily on their way again …
It complements the company’s recently introduced Yellow Pea Protein and its Raw Vegan Protein (made from sprouted, organic brown rice) which has become the “Rolls Royce” of vegan proteins since it was introduced into SA three years ago.
Bruce Cohen, CEO of Absolute Organix which handles the Lifematrix range, says demand for “clean” proteins has been growing rapidly as more and more health-conscious consumers recognize the benefits of amino acid supplementation. “It’s fair to say that proteins are becoming the new superfoods as research unlocks new information about their pivotal role in areas such as immunity and anti-ageing.”
Vegans, says Cohen, have been poorly served with protein options in SA, “but now, with 3 quality plant protein concentrates from Lifematrix, the tide is finally turning; those on a strict vegetarian diets can now easily ensure that their protein needs are met. ”
Lifematrix Pea and Hemp Protein Powder provides a well-rounded amino blend. Says Cohen: “The amino acid profile of pea protein is somewhat low in the sulphur-containing aminos – cysteine and methionine – but hemp, which is rich in these aminos, helps balance that.” The pea/hemp combo delivers a 75% protein concentrate.
All Lifematrix plant proteins are free of ANY additives; just 100% pure protein. They can be used in smoothies, blended with juices or used to protein-enrich soups, stews and curries. They can also be used in baking. They are available in 400g and 1kg tubs.
Our latest product catalogue contains 30 pages of information and photos on the ranges we manufacture and distribute, offering a quick guide to products and brands.

Over 300 bio-chemical reactions in the body depend on magnesium; it helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, and is involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis. Magnesium deficiency has been linked with many health conditions, among them diabetes, asthma, allergies, arthritis, kidney stones, migraines and more.

In our July newsletter, Guest columnist Sally-Ann Creed takes issue with the marketing of soy as a health food. Her article, printed below, has sparked a robust debate. We also publish a response from Pritam Khalsa of Earth Products. Feel free to add your comments
SOY IS NOT A HEALTH FOOD
By Sally-Ann Creed
LIKE MANY people, you may think foods made from the soy bean are synonymous with a healthy way of eating, and an alternative form of protein. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you may automatically assume that soy is the “healthier” option, and a perfect substitute for animal protein. It’s worth looking at the research to determine whether this is accurate information or not.
Hemp produces chlorophyl-rich omega oils and proteins, and in many ways it’s the perfect food – think of it as green sunlight! The omega 3/6 balance in hemp seed oil is excellent – and it includes GLA, whilst the form of protein in hemp (edestin) is highly bio-available and easily metabolised.
Hemptons has been importing certified organic hemp products from Canada for several years, and has now chosen Absolute Organix as its national sales and distribution partner.
Hemptons’ nutritional range consists of hemp seed oil in 500ml and 250ml bottles (as well as 1000mg capsules), hemp protein powder (500g and 1kg) and hulled hemp seed (500g).
On the bodycare front, the range is called Sativa and includes wonderful body and face scrubs, lip treatments, body butters and soaps. Coming soon is an updated haircare range.

Now there’s a sweet new kid on the block (actually it’s been around for centuries): coconut blossom sugar. And it beats the others hands down in terms of taste, nutrients and GI.
Certified organic and imported from Indonesia, our coconut blossom sugar looks and tastes just like conventional sugar, but is completely natural and unrefined. It’s harvested from the blossoms of coconut palms and then dried to form a sugar rich in key vitamins and minerals, including potassium, zinc, iron, and vitamins B1, B2, B3 & B6.
Coconut blossom sugar is never refined or bleached, so all its nutrients are intact – and that’s rare for sweeteners, most of which are highly refined. Even stevia is highly refined
Each has been carefully selected to reflect the best that SA has to offer, and pressed once at low-temp to protect the preserve their nutrients.
We’re launching the Truefood range with a trio of oils: grape seed, estate olive and high-oleic sunflower. Think of them as gourmet oils alive with natural goodness.

When the Dutch arrived at the Cape in the 17th Century, they found the San people were using a small succulent as a mood elevator and relaxant. Known as kanna or kougoed, its botanical name is Sceletium Tortuosum.
Sceletium elevates mood and decreases anxiety, stress and tension. The mood-elevating action of Sceletium is caused by a number of alkaloids which interact with the brain’s dopamine and serotonin receptors and it is being used successfully by health professionals with good results for anxiety states and mild to moderate depression.
The plant is not hallucinogenic, and no severe adverse effects have been documented. There have been no confirmed reports of drug interactions. However, because of the neuro-receptor activities of Sceletium, there may be interactions with other pharma drugs.
Arising out of 17 years of experience and observation by Allisone founder Alison Effting, the Synergy range is designed for ease of use, each combining several targeted tissue salts for maximum benefit.
Earlier this year, the first two synergy blends, Immuno Synergy and Rescue Synergy, were launched and have been well received. The 4 new products will provide additional, effective, solution-based tissue salt remedies.
Within the Synergy range are the basics of systemic care of the body, and they are ideal to use as tonics to maintain wellness. The full range comprises:
# Arthro Synergy to condition the joints; also facilitates athletic performance and recovery.
# Beauty Synergy for skin, hair and nail care for all ages; harmonises stressed skin; formulated for optimal ageing.
# Immuno Synergy to assist the respiratory and immune systems; the environmental allergies and hayfever blend.
# Osteo Synergy for bones and teeth; for pregnant women, growing children and teething babies as well as older, weaker bones or fractures.
# Pure Synergy to harmonise the liver, pancreas, urinary and digestive system; for breakouts, pimples, acne; and helpful for menopausal changes (Rescue too).
# Rescue Synergy to nourish the nervous system and the heart; de-stressing, centering and revitalising energy – for all ages.
As with all tissue salts, the Synergy blends are safe to use at any stage of life, and in conjunction with any prescribed medication or complementary treatment.
Since we introduced Brazilian Acai (ah-sigh-ee) powder into SA some years ago, there has been a steady growth in interest in the health benefits of this Amazon superfruit, which sits at the very pinnacle of the anti-oxidant rankings.
Acai is an expensive commodity; the cost of securing certified organic supplies was always prohibitive, so we were reluctantly forced to import non-organic product in order to establish a market for the superfruit.
Recently we were fortunate to make direct contact with an Eco-Cert approved supplier of organic acai in Brazil at a price point that made sense, and so we are now pleased to advise that we have switched to pure, organic acai.
The organic acai has been freeze-dried (the most effective way to preserve the nutrients and anti-oxidant properties of the fruit). It has a rich, deep purple in colour, reflecting its natural, minimally-processed pedigree. There are zero additives or preservatives.
We are also introducing new simplified packaging/labelling for our organic acai powder (still a 100g pack).
A successful athlete needs to focus on the 3 Pillars of Performance: Nutrition, Training and Recovery. While most athletes excel at training, they often fail to achieve the required balance of all 3 pillars, and usually it is their nutritional strategy (or lack of it) that is the weakest link.
More and more sportsmen and women are now turning to natural nutrition and organic wholefoods to deliver better health, boost performance and improve recovery. This “wellness” approach to performance is in stark contrast to the use of synthetic or highly-processed products which have dominated the sports and fitness scene.
The organic approach just makes good sense. Organic foods free of pesticides and additives provide optimum nutrition because they include metabolic co-factors such as micro-nutrients and anti-oxidants. Products made from organic agriculture using natural enzyme activity, low temperature and chemical-free processing are the richest and purest.
The bottom line: you are what you eat.
Absolute Organix offers superior quality “clean” supplements for those serious about natural health and fitness. These include Omega Sport and our Raw Vegan Protein.

Introducing Health Matrix Magnesium Oil, made from pharmaceutical-grade Magnesium Chloride and Kalahari crystal salt in ultra-purified water. Applied directly to the skin (trans-dermal absorption), it’s readily and safely absorbed – the body will simply take what it needs.

Shifting one’s diet towards more alkaline foods such as green vegetables, increasing one’s intake of pure water and taking mineral supplements are all important strategies for reducing excess acidity and restoring the body’s pH balance.
Health Matrix now makes it even easier to counter excess acidity with our new pH-Plus alkalizing bath soak. pH-Plus combines two of Nature’s most powerful alkaline minerals – magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate – with pristine Kalahari crystal salt containing over 60 minerals and trace elements.
Just add 100g (5 scoops) of pH-Plus to a hot bath and soak in it for at least 20 minutes for maximum benefit. The result: a deeply relaxing, alkalizing experience.
Health Matrix pH Plus is exclusively distributed by Absolute Organix. The recommended retail price is R80 inc for a 600g tub, enough for 6 alkalizing baths.
Our B Grade Certified Organic Maple Syrup from Canada is more than just a deliciously pure, all-natural, silky-sweet treat. It’s also a source of minerals such as manganese, zinc, calcium (15 times that of honey) and potassium.
Harvested from red and black maple trees, our organic Maple Syrup also contains malic acid which boosts metabolism and aids with heavy metal removal.
Grade B Maple Syrup (which is richer in minerals because it is harvested later in the season) is a core ingredient of the popular Master Cleanse detox plan.
It’s available in 500g glass bottles.
While goat’s milk is not lactose-free, it does contain less lactose than cow’s milk and its protein content is less allergenic and more easily digested in a baby’s tummy.
Goat’s milk also has a different fat make-up when compared to cow’s milk, which many babies are more easily able to digest.
Holle, Europe’s leading producer of certified organic infant formulas and baby foods, offers a superior quality organic goat’s milk formula (for infants from six months).
The Holle range is exclusively distributed in SA by Absolute Organix.
